He and his father Ed are very similar in that they are both quite stubborn and determined. We believe Alex and Poppy’s love story, their years of unspoken longing or just-missed chances, because their friendship is so convincing. It’s not dramatic set pieces or wild plot points that make her stories so unique, it’s this quiet, tender realism that makes you believe this story could only have happened with these characters. Emily Henry has an ability to flesh out her characters, their relationships and their vulnerabilities so intimately that they feel like real people. ![]() People We Meet on Vacation takes that narrative voice and applies it to a story that I felt so deeply connected to, it was the bookish equivalent of love at first sight.Ī romance of friends turned lovers with their own doses of heartbreak and changing feelings on the way isn’t a new invention by any stretch, but Alex and Poppy’s story is so beautifully and carefully wrought that it feels utterly unique. There was a real warmth undercut with bittersweetness that made the characters and their central love story come to life in a deeply intimate and immersive way. ![]() The beauty of Beach Read lay in large part with Henry’s writing voice. And call me psychic, because I was absolutely right. In a world where information is power, The Organized Mind holds the key to harnessing that information and making it work for you. Normally I would listen to the book and go back to chapters that interest me for some deeper learning. The Organized Mind debunks myth and presents one simple idea - storing information in the physical world instead of the mind - to revolutionize 21st-century living. This book has got some great insight but it is way too long. What did you like best about The Organized Mind? I won’t spoil them for you, but I think the full story of each could be summarized in just a few short phrases. Neither of these books had much in the way of plot. In all of her books, she seems quite into phrenology.) (Also in common with some other classics, there are some dated sections that today read as racist, ableist, fat shaming, etc. Her insightful observations about human nature are another strength these books have in common with other classics. I really loved her occasional eloquent outburst, protesting the limited avenues of employment open to women in her time. Bronte writes particularly gorgeous, flowery descriptions of nature. Like most classics, I enjoy the vocabulary and sentence structure, the challenge of reading something that doesn’t conform to current norms. As always, her writing is beautiful and distinctive. I did finally finish these though and I’m excited to tell you about them.īronte’s last two novels have a lot in common, but also some significant differences. I’ve been enjoying Bronte’s last two books, but I’ve been preferring more mindless activities, like watching TV ( How To Get Away With Murder, Biohackers) and playing computer games ( Guild Wars 2, obsessively). I’ve not had such a long break in awhile, but lately my brain has been mush. Wow! I can’t believe it’s been two weeks since I posted.
